In this post, I share with you all of my tips to create a skincare routine that will be effective and good for your skin’s health.

How To Build A Solid Skincare Routine

Figure out your skin type
The first step to building a good and effective skincare routine is to determine which skin type you have. That will allow you to choose the right products and know what to deal with in general. For instance, you do not want to buy a cleanser that is meant for oily skin when you have dry skin. That is only going to make your skin drier and may damage it in the long term. Generally, there are 4 types of skins: normal, oily, combination, and dry. It’s basically like a spectrum and your skin can vary, going strongly on one side of the spectrum versus on the other side. For example, I have combination skin that leans towards the dry side of the spectrum. Your skin can also be acne-prone or sensitive (I am both, love that!) but I would consider those as more concerns than types of skins.
Pinpoint your skin concerns
The second step is to figure out what are your skin concerns, especially those you want to target first. My main one is acne, hyperpigmentation, and dryness. Moreover, I know that my skin barrier can get damaged easily hence, I always try to find morning serums to deal with that. By knowing what your skin needs, it will be easier to find ingredients or products that are appropriate for you. Like I mentioned above, you can “suffer” from different types of skin issues, like eczema, oiliness, acne, dullness, and so forth. In order to deal with those issues, you can make your research about different ingredients and you can try out different products to see which ones work best for you.
Start with the essentials
The next step is to first focus on the essentials then build your routine from there. Having a strong base will help you manage better your regimen, know more about your skin and allow you to add the treatments that you feel you need.
A skincare routine should consist of a cleanser, that is meant to remove any excess oil and dirt on your skin, a moisturizer, that is meant to moisturize, and sunscreen, which is meant to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. After that, you can add an exfoliating toner (to remove dead skin cells), a hydrating toner, or a treatment serum (which is filled with concentrated doses of active ingredients).
Know your ingredients
Knowing your ingredients is what will help you target your skin concerns, keep your skin barrier healthy and keep your skincare regimen minimal and effective. There’s no one way to learn about ingredients but basically, it’s all about making your research. Sometimes, I stay hours in front of my laptop figuring out which product with which ingredient is better for my skin. Niacinamide is one ingredient I love to preserve in my skincare regimen because it targets many concerns I have. It’s ideal for acne, hyperpigmentation, and to repair my skin barrier. Nowadays, there are so many youtube channels and bloggers who share their knowledge in skincare. So it’s relatively easy to find information and get educated in skincare.
Consistency is key
The final step to building a good skincare routine is consistency. No beauty product can offer instant results. Skincare takes time and seeing good results takes longer. The key is to stay consistent in order to see results but also to keep your skin barrier healthy because changing routines all the time can be damaging, especially if you’re not an expert.

I just used up my Niacinamide serum and I’ll definitely be repurchasing. It has transformed my skin. Lovely read!

it’s such a wonderful ingredient! thank you so much 🤍🤍
Such a helpful post. I’ve been pretty particular and religious with my skincare routine, growing up, I didn’t have the clearest skin so it’s always been a priority of mine to take good care of it!

Thank you, I’m glad it is!! and yes same here, as a teenager, had a lot of acne which affected a lot my self-esteem. Skincare was my solution
Love these tips! You really have to know what type of skin you have and what products will work for you. Lots of trail and error in my experience.

I think having a simple and minimalist routine is great, especially if your skin likes it.
My downfall is that I am NOT consistent 🙁

that was mine a couple of years ago. I used to change products every week. My skin did not like it!
Definitely informative and helpful post. I think that consistency is so important, it took me quite a long time to get into skin care routine. Now that I have routine, my skin looks better than it ever did. Beautiful post. xx
