How to have healthy skin!

Eat healthily
The first way to keep your skin healthy is to eat a healthy diet. As a matter of fact, there are several studies that showed the relation between gut health and skin health. What you eat can affect the way your skin looks. The most obvious example is dairy or sugar and acne. A healthy diet can make you feel and look at your best. Personally, every time I start eating junk food, my skin starts looking so dull and textured. Of course, a healthy diet does not mean you cannot treat yourself from time to time, it just means that you should eat healthy…most of the time. A healthy diet means; proteins, good fat like avocadoes, fiber, calcium, and good carbohydrates like whole grains. Cooking at home definitely helps reach that goal and remain healthy in what you eat.
Drink water
The second tip to maintain healthy skin is to drink water. Hydration is key to keep your skin plumped and happy and drinking water is an important part of it as it promotes hydration! Usually, hydrated skin is smooth, radiant, and even whereas dehydrated skin is more dull, flaky, and appears dry. Dehydrated skin is also a sign of a weak skin barrier which is the outer surface of your skin meant to protect your skin and to keep it hydrated and healthy!
A good skincare routine
The third tip on my “how to have healthy skin” post is to follow a good and non-irritative skincare routine. Pampering your skin is extremely important to keep your skin happy. You can do that, by following a simple skincare routine that will promote healthy skin. This simple routine includes cleansing your skin with a gentle cleanser, in order to remove all impurities. Exfoliating with a gentle exfoliator to get rid of all dead skin that eventually makes your skin look worse. And finally, moisturizing, in order to keep your skin glowy and hydrated!
Protect your skin from the sun
One of the most important ways to keep your skin as healthy as possible is to stay away from the sun. Sun can be extremely damaging to the skin, causing early signs of aging, wrinkles, spots and increasing the risk of cancer. Moreover, as we grow older, our skin grows more fragile and thinner. This is why it is important to always end your skincare routine with an SPF 30 or 50. And no one is exempt from this skincare rule. Sun is damaging to all and if you want to keep your skin healthy, it is important to wear sun protection and to cover your skin with clothes (body) or hats.
It is also important to choose your sunscreen wisely. Look for one with SPF 30 or more and that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.
Treat your skin gently
The next tip on my “How to have healthy skin” post is to treat your skin gently. It is so important to avoid any abrasive habits that can cause your skin more harm than good. A couple of habits I started following to treat my skin well is for example to pat dry, shave carefully and avoid hot water which promotes water loss and hence makes your skin feel drier. One thing that not a lot of people talk about is your skin barrier and by treating your skin gently, you can easily encourage a stronger barrier and hence a healthier-looking skin. Take it from my experience, my skin used to be extremely resilient so whatever I did to my skin, my skin always resisted but 2 years ago, I thought that using two exfoliators on my skin every day would do nothing but I was wrong. This routine totally messed up with my skin and weakened my skin barrier which led to more breakouts, more irritation, and dehydrated skin.
Quit unhealthy habits
Another tip to maintain healthy skin is to quit unhealthy habits, such as smoking. Most of us know that Smoking causes countless health issues but it also causes your skin to look dull, grey, and wrinkled. I met so many people who smoked for years and omg you cannot imagine how bad their skin looked. This is one of the reasons I never wanted to smoke (the other reasons were that I didn’t want my teeth to look yellow, my breath to smell bad, to have respiratory problems, and to die stupidly from lung cancer).
Manage your stress
Finally, the last tip to maintain healthy skin is to manage your stress. This is the one that I definitely should follow because my stress is uncontrollable 😛! But on a more serious note, stress can cause your skin to look more distressed, to break out, and to be easily irritated. To encourage healthy skin, you need to encourage a healthy state of mind by relaxing, taking a whole day for mental self-care, take a step back on your to-do list and just take care of yourself by doing things you enjoy and that relaxes you. Personally, I never wait till I am stressed to have a self-care day. I always dedicate a couple of hours during the week to practice self-care and focus on my mental health.
