June movie reviews

365 DNI [2020] 1/5

365 days movie review.jpg

“Massimo is a member of the Sicilian Mafia family and Laura is a sales director. She does not expect that on a trip to Sicily trying to save her relationship. Massimo will kidnap her and give her 365 days to fall in love with him.”

“365 Days” makes literally Fifty Shade of Grey look like a masterpiece. This movie is so bad that I could not stop cringing the whole time I was watching it. Everything in it is bad: the actors’ performance is awful (I’m sorry to the actors but it is) and the story is so poorly developed, nothing actually makes sense and the dialogue is so badly written. Plus, the sexual scenes are awkward as hell. On top of that, it romanticizes sexual harassment and rape which I hate. Moreover, this movie is unbelievably sexist and portrays women in the worst possible way.  365 Days is just demeaning to women and I really don’t recommend it. It’s just bad.

Da 5 Bloods [2020] 3.5/5

Da 5 bloods movie review

“Four African American vets battle the forces of man and nature when they return to Vietnam seeking the remains of their fallen squad leader and the gold fortune he helped them hide.”

“Da 5 Bloods” is a very angry movie that tackles the issues of racism against black Americans. The story takes place in a familiar era yet is told from a different angle and from a different perspective. I highly enjoyed watching it and I loved how different it is from the usual Vietnam-war movies. It’s a very layered and emotional movie that first comes off as quite political. It’s a movie that is really ambitious and that has a lot of things to say. It does contain some issues in the character development and I found there was a lack of emotional connection to some of the main characters. Moreover, the storyline is quite chaotic and messy. However, I definitely think this movie is worth watching. Spike Lee does not disappoint!

Jojo Rabbit [2019] 4/5

Jojo rabbit movie review

“A young boy in Hitler’s army finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.”

“Jojo Rabbit” is a sweet, daring, and hilarious movie that takes place in a very serious and heartbreaking moment in history. It’s a very bold movie with so much energy and fun moments. I really don’t understand why it took me that long to watch it because it is a great movie. Waititi’s directorial approach is wonderful and the performance of the actors is amazing. I absolutely loved Waititi’s performance as Hitler. It is iconic and one of the best things that have ever happened to the cinema industry (along with Charlie Chaplin’s iconic portrayal). Moreover, I loved how the story is told in a very colorful and positive way. The costumes and set design are just absolutely amazing. In general, I 100% recommend watching it if you are looking for a fun and harmless satire movie.

Hamilton [2020] 4.5/5

Hamilton movie review.jpg

“The real-life of one of America’s foremost founding fathers and first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Captured live on Broadway from the Richard Rodgers Theater with the original Broadway cast”

“Hamilton” is a cheerful and energetic theatre play that stages meticulously and magically the story of Alexander Hamilton. It contains some amazing and very impressive choreography and presents a wonderful inclusive cast. It definitely made me want to see it live because I was 100% amazed and mesmerized by it. This film just provides a superior level of entertainment and immersion. The story develops beautifully through the modern music of hip hop and R&B and contains some really catchy and poetic lyrics. Moreover, the performance of each of the actors is amazing and the characters, portrayed by these wonderful actors, are very well-developed and very memorable.

5/5: Excellent!

4/5: Very Good

3/5: Good

2/5: Bad

1/5: VERY bad!

That’s it for these mini movie reviews. I hope you enjoyed reading them and if you did, don’t forget to give this post a ‘like’ and to follow my blog.

Uhh, I’ve really been wanting to watch Jojo Rabbit! In my German lessons, we’ve worked with the theme “Hitertainment” and the movie seems very fitting. Great post! Lots of movies I now want to watch 😉 <3

I saw that 365 Days was in the Top 10 on Netflix in Canada for about a week after it was released and I was like “how?!” I only watched the trailer and that was enough to tell me it was bad LOL.

Ohhh if you ever get a chance to see Hamilton in person, please do! We saw it last year, and not to take anything away from Hamilfilm (it’s obv a taping of the actual show so it’s the same thing LOL) but seeing it live makes it 100% better. You don’t get to see everyone up close, but there’s something about seeing the atmosphere of the entire stage that makes it special.
