20 MOVIES TO WATCH ON HALLOWEEN

HAPPY HALLOWEEN MY PUMPKINS! Today, I am sharing with you 20 movies to watch on halloween. I did share two years ago a list of halloween movies to watch, you can check it out here but I really wanted to update this list. Also, in my point of view, not all horror movies are ideal for halloween so there’s a lot of horror/thrillers that I love but that I will not include in this post. In fact, I do intend to share with you my favorites movies from different genres.

20 movies to watch on halloween

Coraline [2009]

“An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.”

Caroline is a thrilling stop-motion movie that literally keeps you at the edge of your seat and leaves you in awe over the gorgeous set design and undeniable creepiness.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street [2007]

“The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, aka Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett.”

Sweeney Todd is a bloody and epic musical that brings the classic theatre play to life with a wonderful cast.

The Addams Family [1991]

“Con artists plan to fleece an eccentric family using an accomplice who claims to be their long-lost uncle.”

“The Addams Family” is the most iconic spooky family to have ever existed. They are fun, they are creepy, they are relatable and they were meant to be watched on halloween.

Nosferatu [1922]

“Vampire Count Orlok expresses interest in a new residence and real estate agent Hutter’s wife.”

A classic in the history of horror cinema but a must-watch for the vampire and cinema lovers. Fun fact: the actor playing Nosferatu is named Max Shrek and was the inspiration for Shrek, the ogre.

Beetlejuice [1988]

“The spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out.”

If dressing up as Beetlejuice characters was not enough wait to actually watch the movie. This highly bizarre yet joyful film is a modern classic and one of Tim Burton’s most reputed movies.

Halloween [1978]

“Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.”

Halloween is a merciless and scary thriller that is easily enjoyable when watched with a group of friends on a spooky rainy day.

A Nightmare on Elm Street [1984]

“The monstrous spirit of a slain child murderer seeks revenge by invading the dreams of teenagers whose parents were responsible for his untimely death.”

Nightmare on ELM street is truly terrifying and an epic movie to watch on halloween night! And, it has Johnny Depp in it.

IT [2017]

“In the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.”

Entertaining, scary and fun, IT can carry you along from the frame opening to the closure.  It has literally become my favorite horror movie of all time and Pennywise is my favorite scary monster!

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark [2019]

“On Halloween 1968, reclusive Stella and her two friends meet a mysterious drifter, Ramón, and uncover a sinister notebook of stories.”

Scary Stories to tell in the dark is an easy-watch that features some really terrifying and iconic monsters that will literally keep you at the edge of your seat.

The Exorcist [1973]

“When a teenage girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her daughter.”

A classic and a must-watch, The Exorcist is truly scary and creepy and I think everyone who loves horror should watch it. Plus, there’s something about vintage movies that are amazing to watch on halloween night.

Harry Potter [2001 – 2011]

To sum up, Harry Potter  is a set of 8 fantasy films revolving around the life of an orphan sorcerer at Hogwarts, the school witchcraft and wizardry.

I bet you didn’t expect me to add the Harry Potter movies to the list. But seriously, doing a Harry Potter marathon on the night of halloween is the best thing you could ever do. This saga was made for this special night, especially, The Prisoner Of Azkaban!

Ghostbusters [1984]

“Three former parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service”

Ghostbusters is a fun and really enjoyable movie to watch as a group. Or to literally watch if you feel like having fun watching a spooky movie.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein [1994]

“When the brilliant but unorthodox scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein rejects the artificial man that he has created, the Creature escapes and later swears revenge.”

Frankenstein’s monster is an iconic character in halloween town so the movie is definitely going to be on my list of movies to watch on that day night. It’s beautifully done, the cast is amazing and it is creepy.

Hocus Pocus [1993]

“A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.”

Can you honestly spend one halloween without watching Hocus Pocus? Cause I can’t. This movie is so enjoyable, so fun, so spooky and so perfect for halloween.

Casper [1995]

“An afterlife therapist and his daughter meet a friendly young ghost when they move into a crumbling mansion in order to rid the premises of wicked spirits.”

This is the kind of movies my parents made me watch when I was a baby but I loved it so much. I’ve always been obsessed with halloween movies and this one is a major throwback. It’s a really fun and cute movie.

The Nightmare Before Christmas [1993]

“Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.”

The Nightmare before Christmas is a beautifully realized confection. It is entertaining, fun and puts you in the best mood for halloween.

Sleepy Hollow [1999]

“Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people, with the culprit being the legendary apparition, The Headless Horseman.”

Sleepy hollow is a very entertaining and eccentric horror movie that envelops the audience in a bloody dream!

Hotel Transylvania [2012]

“Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count’s teenaged daughter.”

It’s safe to say that Hotel Transylvania has recently become part of the movies to watch on halloween. It doesn’t raise the bar for animation or comedy but it is a fun and spooky movie that makes halloween a tad more pleasant and a tad less scary.

Scream [1996]

“A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.”

Scream is a cinematic piece of horror that is bloody and that is intense. But it is super entertaining at the same time.

The Cabin In The Woods [2011]

“Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods.”

Cabin in the woods is fun, wicked, twisted and better than I would have ever imagined, actually. It’s definitely the kind of movie you would enjoy watching with your friends, especially on halloween.
