How To Treat Acne Prone Skin

What causes acne?

There are different types of skin blemish, whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, papules [bumps under the skin]. But basically, acne is formed when the pores clog, which become the perfect ground for bacteria which lives in pores and survives on oils and eventually results in redness and inflammation.

Usually, people with oily skin have acne because the excess of sebum clogs pores. However, a person with dry skin can have acne if the person does not moisturize well the skin and remove the dry patches which can clog pores as well.

Simple tips to follow if you have acne

There are a lot of things that can cause acne: a bad diet, lack of water, not moisturizing enough, dirty sheets, sunscreen, hormones and so on. It really depends on you and the key is to find the reason to know how to fight it. However, here are some universal tips on how to treat acne prone skin!

Tip #1: Wash your face

Keeping your face clean to get rid of any bacteria is really important. However, don’t use a cleanser that makes your skin dry and tight.

Tip #2: Moisturize

Moisturize well your skin because if you don’t, your skin will generate more sebum which will make your skin more oily and hence, cause more acne. You want to choose a moisturizer that is ideal for your skin type, a moisturizer that is non comedogenic [does not clog pores]. Water-based or oil-free products are recommended if you have oily skin!

Tip #3: Exfoliate

Exfoliate because deadskin cells and bacteria clog pores and cause acne. On top of that chemical exfoliators such as glycolic acid keep your pores small. Why is that helpful? well, large pores make more sebum which clogs pores.

Tip #4: Same Routine

Stick with the same routine for a while. Your skin needs to get adjusted to the products you are using. Moreover, skincare products take a while to work so give them the time to actually show results.

Tip #5: Drink Water

That’s it, that’s my tip #5. Keeping your face hydrated is so important and helps in having a clear skin!

Tip #6: Clean sheets/clean towels

Sleep on clean sheets because you don’t want to put your face on something dirty that will cause more acne. Same goes for the towels you use. use clean towel to dry your face.

Tip #7: Don’t Touch Your Face

Don’t touch your face because your hands are dirty and do you seriously want to add more bacteria to your skin and make your acne worse?

Tip #8: Keep your phone out of your face.

Bacterias again and your phone is full of it so make sure your phone does not sit too long on your face when calling someone!

Tip #9: Follow a good diet

Follow a good diet because some food can cause acne such as diary products or sugar. It is not the case for everyone but make sure that no food is causing you acne!

Tip #10: Don’t stress! Meditate

Meditate because we all know stress gives acne and we must keep that away to keep a bright and glowy face!

Tip #11: Don’t scrub on your face

Don’t scrub on your face because that will not remove acne or keep your oils in check. It will irritate your skin and make your condition even worse.

How to treat acne prone skin: what are the ingredients to look for?

  • AHA such as glycolic acid and lactic acid. AHA are chemical exfoliators that are great to remove any dead skin, keep your face smooth and soft.
  • BHA such as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid unclogs pores and helps to control the amount of sebum. It is ideal to use it for temporary acne.
  • Benzoyl Peroxide. It is strong ingredient that kills bacterias that live in pores and survive on oils. This ingredient is ideal for persistent acne. Take care while using this ingredient because it can bleach clothes and hair.
  • Sulfur which can be combined with other ingredients such as Salicylic acid or Benzoyl Peroxide.
  • Tea Tree Oil! Amazing as a spot treatment as well!

If you have sensitive skin, I would not recommend to use several active ingredients all at once. I think one or two would do the job! Also, using one specific ingredient in the morning then another at night is recommended. Again, give the ingredients time to show results.

Stress completely destroy my skin in last few weeks. My forehead is full of little bums and it’s definitely due to stress as I have the same skin care routine. I try to life healthy, low stress life, but sometimes you can’t help it. Lately I included The Ordinary salicylic acid solution and it’s doing wonders. Really want to try more from The Ordinary as this one improved my skin so good. Great list, I definitely agree. xx

yes acne can be so tricky!! As soon as my skin clears out, I get acne like weeks later :p I am just like “WHY” XD I am currently struggling a lot, like my skin cleaned out in the winter but as soon as spring started, my skin went crazy!

      • July 20, 2019 / 1:20 am

I usually break out way more during the summer which is understandable since my skin gets oily but its doing surprisingly well. Lol.
