STYLING 101 | How To Style Patterns & Prints

Hello my lovely pumpkins and happy Monday!!

I hope you are all doing well, today I am going to share with you my tips to style patterns/prints. I know that patterns are hard to style and they are actually very trendy so I hope you find this post to be useful and let me know your tips and tricks to style printed items! Also, all these tips are related to each other and can be used at the same time.

Anyways, don’t forget to check out my previous post which is a CLOSET ESSENTIALS: how to build your wardrobe with basics and let’s get into it!!

1- Same Color Family

This is actually my favorite way of wearing a printed item, and the easiest to be honest.  My trick to find the perfect color is to find a color that is in the pattern. For exemple, my plaid shorts here are white, blue, grey and black so my favorite way to style them to either wear them with a white turtleneck, a grey sweater or black top. It just depends on my mood. But I wouldn’t wear it with blue, because the color is already very dominant on the shorts.

Same with my plaid top, I would wear it with either black or white pants!

2- Complimentary Colors

I am pretty sure I am using the term “complimentary colors” wrong but it does makes sense for this case. A second way to wear a printed item is to pair it with plain tops/bottoms that has a different color than the print but can still look good. Above are different examples, I am wearing that black and white dress with the dark terra-cotta color. Or that same plaid shorts with a burnt orange top instead. This tip depends really on what you like and what you think can look nice with your patterned items.

3- Matching Patterns

A third way is to wear two pieces of clothing with the same pattern. I like this way a lot because it is so effortless yet looks so stylish and looks like you’ve put so much effort into the look. Plus, with this tip, nothing can go wrong :p

4- Graphic T-shirts

Like I mentioned in my Closet Essentials, graphic t-shirts just go with everything and anything really and I love pairing with them with printed bottoms or with printed blazers. Of course, not all patterns are going to look nice with graphic t-shirts, it depends on the patterns and of course the color of the graphic t-shirts. I would advice you to find a graphic t-shirt that has a common color with the pattern, to tie the whole look together.

5- Mix Different Patterns

This is honestly my least favorite way to wear patterns just because, I feel like it’s wrong :p but some people really pull it off and some patterns do look nice paired together so I had to mention it. The trick here to also find at least one similar color or one similar pattern, in the second photo, the outfit has one similar color, white and on top of that, the outfit works cause the green looks nice with white and black, the top has neutrals colors. Same for the outfit I styled, this blazer would naturally look nice with something red.
