The Shape Of Water [2018]

“The Shape Of Water” is a dramatic/fantasy film directed by Guillermo Del Toro and tells the story of a mute maid who works at a top secret research facility and who forms a unique bond with one of the subjects of experience.

This is probably the best films I’ve watched this year. I really love Guillermo Del Toro’s films so it didn’t come as a surprise that this one would be a master piece. However, I have to put this out there, to me, this is not Guillermo Del Toro’s best work. “Pan’s Labyrinth” is still my favorite but honestly, compared to all the movie that came out recently in the cinema, this is one is amazing!

From the visuals to the story, this film is a piece of art. The plot is very well-developed and constructed and it is very original, I liked the fact that it is set in the real world and that it happens during the Cold War but has a touch of fantasy [my favorite genre really]. The cinematography and art direction is another story. Visually, the movie is breathtaking, I love the colour palette of this film and some of the shots are gorgeous.

Another thing that makes this film a master piece is the acting. The performance of the actors/actresses is amazing, their acting is so believable and genuine. Moreover, Sally Hawkins’s performance is on point, for a character who does not speak, she delivered her character’s deepest intentions and feelings perfectly well, her performance really moved me. And let’s not talk about Doug Jones because he is amazing and he plays the character of a non-talking mermaid!

In conclusion, I think “The Shape Of Water” is a must-watch, I really recommend it and I rate it a 5/5.

5/5: Excellent

4/5: Very Good

3/5: Good

2/5: Bad

1/5: VERY bad!

That’s it for this movie review. I hope you enjoyed reading and if you did, don’t forget to give this post a ‘like’ and to follow my blog.

Planning on seeing this though heard it wasn’t as good as it looked.
Saw Den of Thieves last week. Have seen worse. Worth seeing.
Molly’s Game the best I have seen recently. Idris Elba is always excellent.

Looks good. Not sure when I will next go to the cinemas. Nearly finished season 3 of Twin Peaks. That will finish a chapter on something.

      • February 11, 2018 / 6:56 pm

But you said it’s based on a true story? I mean I know they tend to exaggerate in films like these:)

        • February 11, 2018 / 7:04 pm

No i meant that the contest is real because the cold war did happen and it is set in the real world but the story itself is fantasy (like it’s unnatural to fall in love with a mermaid)

Great review:) after seeing that this movie received a lot of Academy Award nominations I said I wanted to watch this before the 2018 Oscars come on, I’ve heard it was a really good movie.

I just watched this yesterday – there was so much hype about it and I went in with high expectations. I love Guillermo Del Toro BUT… this was just an ok movie. I felt the romance between the 2 were really rushed and the storyline very predictable. (I even guessed at her scars as soon as I saw them…) The acting was excellent though, I agree. I rate this movie an overall 7/10.

I have to say, I completely agree with you – I thought this movie was going to blow my mind and i was left a little like….”oh is that it?” I didn’t even really think their was a romance literally until they had sex. (I knew there would be but i didn’t FEEL it) The acting and cinematography were brilliant though!x

      • February 12, 2018 / 7:25 am

Yeah this is not Guillermo Del Toro’s best work and I agree the story was more cliche than usually (compared to his previous work) but i still think it’s better than what came out recently in the cinema!! Thanks a lot for reading and commenting, i like reading about other people’s opinions ☺️❤️

It’s nit my favourite movie by Guillermo Del Toro of course, Pan’s Labyrinth will always be my favourite but i did think it’s better than anything that came out in the cinemas recently!! Thanks a lot though for reading and for commenting!! Love knowing other people’s point of view!!

I saw the trailer for this the other day and I was intrigued. I probably won’t see it, I’m just not a fantasy movie person, but I’m so glad you liked it! Thanks for the review! 😊

Not on anymore at the cinemas I have a subscription to. Am going to find another still showing it.
I seem to have missed All the money in the world too.
My folks go to the films weekly. They give a heads up too.
The Winston Churchill film might be worthwhile too. Your Dunkirk suggestion last year was a good one.

I love to read your movie reviews, you are always so honest! I have seen the trailer of this movie so many times and even though it’s something that I usually wouldn’t watch, I am really tempted. And even more now since you said it’s really good! xx

I really want to see this! LOL I actually had no idea what it was about until reading this review, but I love Guillermo del Toro’s movies…plus the fact that it’s nominated for more than a few academy awards means that it’s got to be at least decent.

    • February 23, 2018 / 9:55 pm

Yess exactly!! Thanks a lot for reading 💕

Loved this movie, thought it challenged people to think about how they perceive things. Helped shed light for people to be more open about being different. Everything was well done in the film too from music to acting to set design etc. Thx for the review!
