Arrival [2016]

‘Arrival’ was directed by Denis Villeneuve and tells the story of a linguistic professor who, after twelve alien vessels have landed on earth, is tasked to interpret the language of those invaders.

I decided to watch this film not knowing what it was about, I only checked the ratings, and it is pretty well rated [94% in Rotten Tomatoes and 8/10 on IMDB].

I’m going to start this review by saying that this movie is not the best sci-fi film I’ve ever watched, in fact, this topic has been tackled a couple of times in the cinema industry. Nevertheless, the approach of this film to this topic is different and original. I liked how they constructed/developed the story and I liked how they focused on ‘the first communication between humans and aliens’, the story is definitely different than other alien stories. I also loved how the aliens are portrayed as mysterious, intelligent, advanced and peaceful beings, despite the fact that they are physically scary.

Furthermore, I liked the fact that there is not a lot of visual/special effects such as bombings or gun fires. It proves that the director and script writers relied more on the plot and acting for the film to be actually good.

Another thing that I loved in this film is the soundtrack, it really emphasizes the mood of the film and the genre. Moreover, the director used the sound to build up the suspense and also to represent the other civilizations [the aliens], after all, the film is about ‘language’.

On another note, I think Amy Adams’s performance is great, it is very believable and she really was able to convey her emotions. However, her performance did not surprise me whatsoever and her acting was not that vulnerable: I really wanted to see more emotions, I really wanted her to burst into tears and to literally go crazy because of what’s happening to her, I just wanted to see more.

In conclusion, I really appreciated this sci-fi film; even though it is slow paced, it really grabbed my whole attention and kept me interested till the end. I don’t think this is a must-watch but it was nominated for several Oscars and won best achievement in sound editing, so I think it’s worth watching.

I really liked this movie, it had a heart and a brain. I thought Amy Adams beautifully portrayed the determined linguist with a lovely subtlety.

Instead of explosions and big battles, it’s the message of communication and understanding that really shines.

I liked how it had a compelling and intelligent story, that could also provoke deep thinking. It’s a rarity in movies sometimes.

It took me a while before I watched this movie myself. I heard that it was a little slow paced so I had to be in the mood for something like that. Did enjoy the movie though, and it did keep my attention throughout the film despite very little “action” which I am fond of. Do agree it a was good movie, but probably won’t be one of my favorites.
Thanks for sharing your thought’s on the movie!
